Anybody else experiencing the dreaded "Schematic Capture & PCB Layout Program has stopped working" when trying to print PDFs of pcb layouts?

I find it very "iffy" at the best of times with EPC crashing 95% of the time.

@edrees, I paid for Easy-PC 17, but the CD hasn't arrived yet. Printing is not available in Easy-PC 17 demo.

Holadi,-

You will have to ask Fiona to send you the CD.
No1 don't ship CDs automatically. They email you with a download link by email when you've paid. Link is only valid for a few days.

PDF output has never worked properly. Just install the "CutePdf" (or similar) printer driver and use the Windows option in "Printing & Plotting".

Thanks John for your comment, and that is indeed how I get around the problem. However, I didn't really have a problem printing PDFs (from File>Print>PDF) in V15 and earlier.

About time we had an upgrade to sort out this and all the other issues with V17 release, or have the Developers now all gone on holiday?

Ah, I missed V15 going straight from V12 to V16 so have never seen the PDF output working.

Update 17.0.1 is being issued today, but looking at the fixes listed in it and also checking our support database for open issues, we are not aware of any significant issues along the lines of "the PDF output has never worked properly".

David.

Hi David.

EPC is advising me that V17.0.1 is available but there is no download link on your website (yet?).

Please note and resolve problems with printing PDFs (of pcb layouts only) with V17. No point in "interactive" PDFs (which freeware PDF995 et al do not provide) if it crashes the program.

Hope that the arrow keys "nudge" and X,Y position report bug is now fixed. This is a real pain in V17.0.0

17.0.1 is now available for download, just a small hiccup with some files arriving on the web site in the wrong order so the 'check for updates' file was posted before the patch file was there.

This update does fix the issue with PDF output of a PCB contained in a project, and also the problem with nudging items with the arrow keys.

Not sure what the "XY position report" issue refers to, perhaps you would care to expand on that? It may be something we've fixed, but I need a bit more to go on.

David,

See,-
http://www.numberone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=846
also I emailed Peter regarding this issue. Hopefully, this is what you refer to in your post "with PDF output of a PCB contained in a project".

Now all I need to do is get the V17.0.1 update install to work!

Now I see where you are looking, DX/DY on the status bar, not the XY component positions report on the Output menu. Makes sense now!

There are some things we can do with the Nudge feature, it looks like the Size values are not being updated for example, but because Nudge effectively works like "pick up, move one step, put down" the DX/DY values are only displayed during the instant it is moving. Once it puts the item down again, it is no longer moving, and hence no DX/DY information is available.

Incidentally, Nudge doesn't require the left button to be held down, apparently a common misconception. Just select (left click) on the item to be moved, then use only the arrow keys to Nudge it by the desired amount.

......only if Preferences>Interaction,>Allow Nudge Of Selected Items is ticked, -and then the dx/dy feature doesn't work properly, i.e. it flashes very very briefly, so you don't have time to note it

Hi Iain,

The clue to the fix is in my earlier post,- disable the "Allow Nudge Of Selected Items" and all will be restored to what you were used to.

This feature allows selected items to be shifted without reference to the cursor position (and without holding the left mouse button down), which can more easily and more usefully be done the "old" way with the left button held depressed.

According to the Developers this is not a "show stopper" and involves an inordinate amount of work to b fixed.

An useful new feature for V17? I think not, just adds to the clutter of other useless features buried within the "Preferences" list, which is now becoming too comprehensive to understand. Just get rid of the option please.

I've just installed the 17.0.1 update and PDF output from the plotting & printing menu seems to work now. It was broken with both V16.0.x & V17.0.0 and crashed the system every time I tried to use it.

I have to investigate increasing the margins on the PDF output, but might just revert to using the CutePdf Windoze printer driver as it works perfectly.

I'm still using Vista Home Premium with SP2.

I have discovered another problem with Easy PC PDF output. This time it's when using Truetype fonts. As it was a simple exercise I created some Bridge scorecards in Easy PC (the alternative was Open Office Draw) and have found that the PDF output renders Truetype fonts in the wrong position. Here are some screen dumps of what I am talking about.

Firstly the result I wanted to achieve from the PDF output from the Easy PC "Plotting and Printing" menu:

http://mydesk.myzen.co.uk/_Useful/EasyPc/EasyPcPdfOutput.jpg

Secondly the text positioning I had to use in the Easy PC schematic to achieve this output:

http://mydesk.myzen.co.uk/_Useful/EasyPc/EasyPcDrawing.jpg

Finally that drawing rendered to a PDF file by the CutePdf printer driver:

http://mydesk.myzen.co.uk/_Useful/EasyPc/EasyPcCutePdfOutput.jpg

As you can see the Cute Pdf driver renders the drawing exactly as it appears on the screen whereas the Easy PC driver moves all the Truetype text downwards and changes the font size!

I haven't noticed this with the system stroke font normally used for schematics.
