Hi,

I am designing a power amplifier - and due to the number of components and proposed board layout, i was planning to use a number of wire links to ensure the integrity of a continuous ground plane.

Are wire links in analogue PCB design relatively common or acceptable ?.

Are there any drawbacks at all ?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Shadders.

Hi Shadders,

If its audio power I doubt if there would be any problem, but you would not normally want to link planes with local links as this mean the planes are being joined by a localised inductive connection. Unless your trying to do this on a two layer board, there should be no problem in maintaining a continuous power plane anyway.

Hi Iain,

Thanks for the reply.

This is for a number of single resistor connections across the board, to allow the ground plane to be uninterrupted. I have seen designs with links, but was not sure if there were any disadvantages.

Thanks for your guidance on this, much appreciated.

Shadders.

Shadders, is it an audio design, an if not, what frequency ?

Hi Iain,

Yes, and audio power amplifier - cut off frequency closed loop will be 100kHz approximately.

I think standard wire links at this frequency should be ok.

Would you agree with this ?.

Thanks and regards,

Shadders.

I cannot see this being a problem, just ensure your links are as short as you can make them, and that they are heavy enough for the currents involved.
