We've had various reports about issues with the 'file browser' dialog used in various places in the application for Open and Save actions. The symptoms are either that the dialog takes a long time to display, or it displays but the Open/Save button does nothing.

This dialog is a standard Microsoft file browser dialog, which we simply invoke with the relevant parameters to prime it with default file/folder names, and whether it should display as 'open' and 'save'. Once we invoke the dialog, whatever it does is outside of our control which is why it has proved difficult to resolve the reported issues.

What appears to be happening is that Windows can get 'confused' into remembering past connections to devices that are no longer present. This can include things like mapped drive letters or paths to network folders no longer available, 'boost' settings on USB memory sticks or external hard drives, etc. It can take Windows a while to recognise that the devices are no longer accessible, during which time the dialog is unresponsive.

If you are having this kind of problem, it is worth searching on the Internet for suggestions on how to resolve it. There are a number of causes reported, which makes it difficult for us to be specific about the precise reason on any particular computer. Some useful references we have found are:
