Just for info.....

Using V15.08, Windows7, 64 bit in dual screen mode.
When I auto rename the schematic component designators, I initially get the updated designator info, but then, when I Forward Design Changes (to pcb), I get a repeatable unrecoverable error. Change to single screen mode and all is well!

Several fixes in this area have been done during the life of V16 so you should find that the problem has now been resolved. Doesn't help you in 15.0.8 of course, but when you get around to upgrading I think you should find the issue is sorted.
