How do I create components for footprints with alpha-numeric pad-names?

For example, if I'm doing a 256-pin BGA, the data sheet will have pin definitions like Terminal: TCK, Pin B4.

If I want to map a schematic-terminal do I have to work out that B4 is pad number (1*16) + 4 = 20 or can I actually refer to the pad as B4?

I have tried the 'Name pins by row/column' dialog, but whatever I put in the spacings dialog, it seems to use huge increments.

The pin numbers on the schematic and layout symbols must be numeric, however the pin names in the component entity that links schematic and layout symbol can be alpha-numeric.
These can be displayed on circuit diagram and / or layout as required.

Thanks for the reply - so by the sounds of it, I do actually have to caluclate the layout-symbol pin numbers myself inorder to do the component mapping as the datasheets have no numeric values for the pin-names at all.

the pcb symbol would just be numbered 1...256 in rows starting from one corner. Then when you are in Component Edit to set up the pin mapping, you will find on the Edit menu a command called 'Name Pins by Row/Col' that will help you apply the correct A1, A2, etc across rows and columns.

It might require a little thought to specify the right direction, taking care for example whether the datasheet shows the pin naming with the component on its back with the solder balls in the air, whereas what you want for the PCB design is it flipped over to stand balls-downwards so to speak!

Thanks DavidM - for some reason when I try 'Name pins by Row/Col' the dialog comes up with Col and Row steps of 39. Even if I edit them down to 1 and 1, the numbering still has massive jumps.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

Hard to say from here, perhaps you could save the footprint symbol to a file and email it to Support and we'll take a look.
