Using 13.01 if I turn off a component name instead of it disappearing it shows as <?>. Even old boards that worked OK in 12 show the same <?> when opened in 13.
I have also notice a new error appearing that I have not seen before - "copper text is outside the board outline". My copper text is near the board edge but definitely on the board. If the new "check text shapes" box is not ticked then I get an X-B error as I would expect. Ticking this check box gets rid of the X-B error, which is great, but leaves this new one.
Any thoughts on these two problems please. |

There was a problem in earlier versions. Because you can select what's allowed to be displayed overall in a component's properties, and also select what text may be displayed by a particular reference origin, it was possible to choose mutually exclusive options, and 'lose' the reference. It was still there, but because no text was valid, it couldn't be seen, or selected. If you were aware of it, you could enable all text within the component to find it, but it wasn't obvious.
Now if this happens, the 'lost' reference will appear as <?> just as a placeholder so it can be found.
The other problem has been logged as a bug. The check is using an excessively oversized bounding box rather than the actual text, giving an error if any part of the bounding box happens to overlap the board profile. |

Thanks Peter.
I have now found a new ( I assume it is new) preference setting that shows or hides the <?> on the silkscreen when a component name is empty.
Go to Settings - Preferences - Display- Drawing and change the tick for the "Draw "Empty" values" option. This gets rid of them all without having to individually delete them and you can get them back quickly if you need to.
This option is actually mentioned in the help files in relation to empty values but not names. |

They're both the same - they both use the reference origins as markers. |
