I have just upgraded to V13 and took all the new and updated librarys. (I have full set).
Having just started a new desing and used componets I find that 2 out 2 are wrong. Thats a 100% failure rate !!
I added voltage reg LM1117DT-3.3. Vin and Vout are swapped !! There is only 3 pins on this device, how hard can be to get right ?
I also added RS232 driver MAX3243ECAI. The foot print has been completly flipped. ie pin 15 is where pin 1 should be.
Is it too much to ask that when we buy librarys that they should have been checked/tested ???
I would advise every user to check each and every device against the datasheet before adding it to your design, you can't assume the librays are correct.
If you don't check you may be wasting hundreds of pounds making scrap boards !! |

I have to agreee here.
I normally use my own libs when I can, but for "standard Components I tend to see if they exist in the supplied libs. I added a somple transistor (a BC something or other) in a SOT23 package only to discover that the collector and the emitter was crossed over !!. I did not look at this further as I had to get on, but I think what could happen here is that you have to be careful what libs are open during any design, if there are two footprints of the same name (say SOT23) only the first one found will be used, now that one may have its pin numbers different from the second (perhaps the correct one) for the selected schematic .... so yes this is a bit of a nightmare. I use customers custom libraries which make this even worse. Before you start a layout you need to troll through the folders enabling and disabling the libs you "think" you may need or not. Wish this was better.
I did in a previous post ask if Number one could do a "masterclass" on libraries, but I fear it fell on deaf ears !

I agree with Iain that a tutorial on libraries would be useful.
I've basically defined all my libraries myself, but for a long time I didn't know if it was the 'right' way to do things. Even now I know I don't use the libraries to their fullest extent; I hardly ever use any other information other than package size & value!
IIRC, I also had a problem a while ago with pins being flipped in a component. These days I define all my components myself, as it seems to be the most reliable way of doing things. |
