Is it possible to export the 3d view so it can be read in by a 3-d modelling program like ProE

There is a cost option (you have to buy it separately) 'IDF export' which is run from the PCB layout, rather than the 3D view.
IIRC, it doesn't even cost that much!

If you search for IDF in the help file, it will tell you all about it. :)

HTH,
Best wishes,
Olga.

I should point out that the IDF export does not exactly export the 3D view you can see on the screen. IDF is a simplistic format that includes a basic shape derived from the footprint, that is then 'extruded' to a specified height.

But we do have customers who put it to good use with software like SolidWorks, and I believe there are ways of mapping parts in the IDF to sub-assemblies in SolidWorks to get a better result.

Am I right in thinking there is no option to export the 3D view as a picture as you see it on screen without resorting to screen capture or printing and rescanning, i.e. no save as bitmap or copy to clipboard ? (not at my computer at the moment so I can't check).

the DXF export does not seems to work as well...

All I get in the end is a flat PCB with all the layers mixed...

absolutely unusable

There's no specific export format for the 3D view other than IDF, but you can print it. That does open up other possibilities, such as installing a 3rd party pdf creator that looks like a printer driver. Alternatively, install a Linotronics printer driver from your Windows printer list, and print to file. That will give you Postscript.

You also have the option of screen capture, of course, but if you set it up to use Windows metafile under [Settings], [Preferences], then you'll get much better resolution than just a plain bitmap.

Hi Peter,

Can you be a bit more explicit on how to do that. I set up my preferences for using metafile under copy on the interaction tab but when I use PrintScreen to screen capture I only get offered bitmaps to paste - sorry, I'm probably just being a bit dense.

Could it be requested as a feature to be able to save the 3Dview as a bitmap or metafile or, dare I hope, a format that supports a transparent background such as a png as an explicit item on the file menu when in 3D view, afterall, you're already rendering the image ?

Cheers

Mark
