I have a two groups of components in identical circuits. I have done the track layout for one. When I apply the pattern layout to the second group, it only re-creates the top copper and silk screen. The bottom tracks are missing and only net connections shown !

I was using the Layout Pattern only the other day and was just thinking how well it all worked. Had no problems at all. Components, tracks & silk on both sides. The important thing is the circuits must be identical, any mismatch will result in rubber bands & not tracks. Are you sure you selected any components you have on the bottom side?

No comps or bottom silk... only tracks on the bottom. I've just tried it again and the bottom tracks and vias for that matter do not translate. Circuits are identical... in fact they are schematic copies.

Just had another look..... any track that has a via connected (top or bottom) does not translate.... also report says everything matches

I can only think the design is not valid for some reason. Have you tried running the DRC with all checks on. Do the vias have the plated tick set. I managed to make a pad & somehow it ended up as a bit of silk screen, does the via really have copper both sides? Failing that support always seem very helpful, maybe you should them send the bit that fails and ask them nicely.

The details of this problem have now been logged for the programmers attention.

Hi Iain,
I too have found that any track with a via on it will not work with Apply Layout Pattern, which includes wire links of course.
I have also noticed that if I have, say, ten identical sections in one named group with IC1 to 10 thus named along with resistors etc, when I apply layout pattern sometimes it will increment the components in a logical manner, ie: from left to right in ascending numbers then suddenly it will put them in a random order which messes up the routing and the board legends.
Apart from that, it works very well and has saved me a lot of time in layout.
I do hope they sort the problem since some of my layouts are quite involved and I spend a long time re-routing the parts that don't translate.

Boris

Just sat down to do a layout using this utility and found that the problem still exists.... all vias that are part of the source layout are removed and the tracks that were connected are riped up and replaced by net connections !!!!

Also it seems that you cannot spread groups across multiple schematics in a design. It kinda works but you end up with strange effects where component numbering goes all funny.

Peter.... can you have a look at this again ????

Sometimes there are no 'precise' answers to component selection, bypass capacitors for example are generally difficult to distinguish from each other based on their component type and connectivity, but on the whole we find that it does a pretty good job of matching things up.

If anyone has specific cases that don't seem to work, then we are of course happy to check them over and work out how we can improve the results. Just send them through to support@numberone.com and we will take a look.
