For some time we've been getting reports of a problem where the program, apparently randomly, simply refuses to save the current file. There appears to be no cause or pattern to this, except that Windows 10 does seem to be marginally more prone to it, but this may simply be a reflection of the prevalence of this version.
Today, a user has given us some vital information (thank you, Chris).
"What I have discovered is that if the folder you are trying to save to does not already have at least one file in it with the expected extension (e.g. .sch for me just now) you can click the Save button till you are blue in the face and it just doesn't do it."
The upshot of this is that if you experience this problem, minimise the program, then save a random text file into the folder where you're trying to save. If you're using Notepad, set the file type to 'All files' before saving, then you can add an appropriate extension instead of .txt as you save. This could be .sch, .pcb, .prj, .pnl, or one of the symbol/component extensions if you're not adding directly to a library. The presence of this dummy file then allows the file save to complete.
As has been said in previous threads, we use the standard Windows file management utility for file handling, so the actual file saving is handled outside the program. We'll investigate this new information, but it may well turn out to be a subtle Windows problem. |
