We've always experienced CTDs when using EasyPC (we started with v13).
But v17 appears to be the worst of the bunch.
We have an engineer laying out a 4 layer board, and EasyPC crashes maybe a dozen times a day !!
I know the advice will be to upgrade to v19, but we've no confidence that this will fix the problem.
We've tried using multiple versions of Windows and several difference PCs to try and isolate the root cause ... but crashing occurs on all our tests.
There is no particular operation that will trigger a crash ... although it does seem to be only on the PCB layout side of things.
Is there any debugging options we can enable to help track down the problem(s) ?
Cheers Mark J.

If it's not the PC and many of us will testify that EPC is not that unstable, it is more than likely to be down to modus operandi.
Are you using dual screen? This is known to be unstable. Has this "suddenly" appeared on V17 (it's been some time since this was released!)? |

Crashing occurs on different PCs, different OSes, different projects, different "users".
And, yes, single screen still has crashing.
As per my OP, we've always seen crashing on all versions we've had, and have installed fixes when released.

Mark,
Suggest you sent this info directly to Peter/David in Support. That info is meaningless to most of us!

Hi Mark, I switched from using Orcad / Cadence to EPC version 18 over a year ago and did find EPC buggy initially plus I was going through the learning curve but patches were provided and now, a year later I'm on version 19 and I can honestly say, version 19 is practically bullet proof. There is a patch due out for a specific issue (Copper pours?) that someone(s) encountered - I'm more than happy with version 19. It costed the company I work for approx £60 for the upgrade plus a years free technical support. I can say with 99.9999% certainty, you won't have the issue you are reporting any more with version 19. This is probably my 2nd post ever on the forum, I don't work for EPC, just felt compelled to try and convince you to upgrade and continue on with designing your products - time is precious and new designs are challenging enough,

Users have in the past reported "instability" when a background auto backup system (Cloud sync) is installed.
File access can be compromised.

We don't run any "sync" apps, but thanks for the heads up.
We're going to video capture a full day's work to see if that highlights any possible causes.
Other than that, I'm also trialling v19 to see if that seems better.
Time will tell ...

Hi Mark,
5 weeks later on, -did your trial of V19 prove OK, or are you still experiencing crashes? Or did you get to the bottom of the original problem? Is so, please share your findings with us.

Inconclusive really.
v19 seemed okay, but I didn't have much chance to do much testing.
v17 crashed a few more times, but for no apparent "definitive" reason.
I guess we'll upgrade at some point, but we're doing less and less design now so it may be v20+.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
