I am using an old version (17.5) and it has always been OK.
But recently when trying to re-position a symbol; for example, an IC or module), I click anywhere on the item and it gets selected and I could move it, but now when I try to move the item, it jumps to position its reference point at the cursor position !
If there happen to be tracks attached to the item it makes a terrible mess.
Please does anyone know how to correct this very annoying behaviour ?

This sounds as though dynamic align is active. Go to [Settings], [Preferences] and look at the 'Schematic Interaction' and 'PCB Interaction' tabs. In both cases try disabling this option which I think will resolve the problem.
