I have used a library part that has an assembly layer, but my layout does not have this layer in it. Out of curiousity I tried to add this layer in my pcb using the Settings, Design Technology, Layers dialogue box. But there is no layer type 'Assembly' available. Can you explain please?

Posted - 07 Jun 2011 : 18:13:27 I made a small edit of the library part, and now the Top Assembly layer shows up on the pcb layout. It looks like a skeleton of the part including the pins, which I think is quite useful.
In my design I have some connectors that overhand the board edge. I have redrawn the component Silk Screen to fit within the board outline, but added a Top Assembly layer to show the true outline including the off board profile.
Handy.

Posted - 07 Jun 2011 : 17:28:11 Perhaps I should clarify that I used a No1 library part, and discovered that it had a 'Top Assembly' layer. Curiosity led me to wonder what the Top Assembly is, and for that matter what an Assembly layer is used for.
This sort of thing is always happening to me with EZ-PC. Perhaps I'm a bit behind on the curve of new features and techniques :)

Posted - 07 Jun 2011 : 13:38:35 I tend to use these extra layers for text only, this is added directly to the artwork on the appropriate layer. If you want to put information on the part I think that you will need the new layer type and new layers added to the particular parts that will have the assembly info. I guess this will have to be done during library maintenance. I suggest you copy and rename the part to avoid it being overwritten during updates etc. |

Posted - 06 Jun 2011 : 22:15:57 Thanks for your help. I have found that I can create a new layer type 'Assembly' in the pcb design, then add a new layer of that type called 'Top Assembly'. But it doesn't pick up and display the Top Assembly layer of the library part I mentioned originally. Perhaps there is some differences?
Just curious really, I don't have a use for this Top Assembly layer.

Posted - 06 Jun 2011 : 21:34:44 You can add any number of 'dummy' layers for such things as assembly, servicing etc. You will need to create a layer type first. I create a layer type 'document' then other layers with 'assembly_notes', 'manual_drilling', 'test_points' etc.

Posted - 06 Jun 2011 : 17:25:01 Hi john
As I understand it an assembly layer is generally produced as documentation to assist rework and test designers. I'm not sure it's something widely or regularly produced although others with more up to date experience may like to comment.
