I created 3 extra non-electrical layers to hold imported gerbers while I traced the layout pattern onto my electrical layers to produce a proper EasyPC pcb file. That all works fine by now if I select and delete everything on these layers I cannot delete the layer entries as there is still an X beside the layer indicating that it is used in the design.

After a bit of faffing about have managed to do this. Rather that try and delete the layers in the design, what I did is copy the layers I wanted to keep into a new design and hey presto that seems to work !
