I am trying to reset all of the ref des in a schematic so that the top left corner has the lowest number ref des and goes up from there.

When I try to use auto rename component nothing happens.

You can do that in a pcb, but in a schematic the auto renumber has a different function. It's intended to close gaps in the sequence of component numbering, not assign them in a particular physical pattern.

As you're seeing no effect, I presume that there weren't any gaps in any of the component number sequences.

If you want to number in a particular order, you'll have to manually change the numbers using each component's properties. It's a bit like playing clock patience as you can't have duplicate numbers, so you may end up changing some to an intermediate placeholder.
