I have found a handy way to avoid auto rename screwing up a pcb which has components allready placed.

Suggest you do a backup first, just incase...

When Auto Rename box is open, type into START a number unused across the design, ie 1000, then all components in schematic are now renamed R1000, R1001 etc.
Forward design changes, everything in the pcb is still where I left it.

Go back to the schematic and Auto rename components again but this time START from 1.
Forward design changes and voila.

If this works without any issues, could this feature be automated in a future version.
