Posted - 27 Oct 2012 : 19:13:48 I am trying to update some very old drawings. I am getting a 'failed to import' error when trying to open them. I have also tried created a new project and adding the sch and pcb files to it, I get the same error. I am running Easy-PC V16.0.4 on vista. I have never had this problem before. This seems to be selective as I can open files dated before and after. There are several projects involved with readable ones in between. The oldest files I can open are in Easy-PC DOS (early 1990s?).
Any suggestions?

Posted - 14 Oct 2013 : 08:33:15 This is probably because the translation process has to write some temporary files, which I suspect are written alongside the original file instead of looking for the 'official' temporary folder on the hard drive. With the original being on a CD it would not have been able to create the temporary files.

Posted - 13 Oct 2013 : 16:11:50 I know this is an old topic but I just had a problem loading some old DOS files into version 14. The files were on a CD and I found that if I copied the files to my C: drive and cleared the read only flag they could be opened and re saved normally. Some of the component origins had changed but they were easily moved around. |

Posted - 31 Oct 2012 : 08:38:36 Problem sorted.
I was running 16.0.4 and hadn't noticed that 16.0.5 was out. Peter managed to open a couple with 16.0.5. I have now upgraded to that and all is OK. |

There should be no problem opening old files ..... Send them to numberone and they should be able to tell you what is wrong, and probably even recover them for you.

Posted - 29 Oct 2012 : 18:07:58 I have tried a recent backup (2006) and an earlier version of Easy-PC (11). On an XP machine. All combinations gave the same error. I am going to try an earlier combination when I can retrieve the disks. Unfortunately I cannot redraw these as I cannot open either the SCH or PCB file to see what the design actually was. |

Posted - 29 Oct 2012 : 14:13:22 I had a problem with DOS files in version 14, Only top pads were output in the gerber file. This was fixed in 14.0. 4.
I have opened DOS files in V16 without an apparent problem, but as of yet have not tried gerber output. But to be honest I know that if I was to use these files for updating purposes, I would need to redraw them.

Posted - 29 Oct 2012 : 00:58:08 Iain. Thanks for the offer but there are hundreds of them. Some with confidential information. I may select a sample one to send to you or Peter. First I am going to install an old Easy-PC on an old machine and see if that will open it. If so I will open and save all and see what happens. If that worked for the old version but not for 16 I intend to try with an intermediate version and try to get them up to date that way. I will also look in my backups from the last century. Most of these are from mid 1990s. |

Posted - 27 Oct 2012 : 21:14:49 Could be they are corrupt. I would send them to numberone, even if they are corrupt they may able to re-cover them.
Or if you want to send one to me to see if it can open on a different platform, I don't mind trying .....
