I found the documentation of the IDF format on http://www.simplifiedsolutionsinc.com/images/idf_v30_spec.pdf. The format is not difficult to understand. We can write ower own converters instead of complaining !!
Who is motivated and has time to write some converters such as IDF -> STEP or IGES converter and IDF - > G-code converter ?

To survive in 'a' veeery-slow judicial system and highly
customised/choosy job market, you certainly want to afford
most of your production chain in-house at low cost and above
all prying eye's! especially if you are a defense sub-sub-contractor.
Watch out the Chi...se are everywhere! copying everything.
Our vibrant textile industries are all gone here in Ghana to
the Chi...se.

Why not do it yourself then? Like Iain & 636 Steve, I don't know what all the fuss is about. Maybe because my job function is predominately circuit design. I hand pick-and place protos and sub contact anything else out to my local professionals who have never queried the CPR generated by EasyPC

It seems that most poeple don't have the IDF option. So I decided to write a converter which can transfer the data from gerber file to IGES. Everyone can produce a gerber file. The IGES file is easier and less complicated than STEP and all mechanical cad systems recognise the IGES format. There are tons of IGES models on the internet (3D component models).
Who is motivated and has time to write a gerber -> IGES converter ? |

We have 3 different types of pick and place machine and none of them use G code. They all use there own format which we create by converting the csv output from easypc.
Which machine uses g code? |

I am not sure what all the fuss is about here.
I have used many manufacturers who ask me for a pick and place file, and I send them the component positions report generated from Easypc and not one has ever come back to me saying they cannot use that.
Am I missing something ?.

I use G-code on my mill,router and lathe...And will be using it soon on a laser I'm building when I can get the smoothie grbl code to compile and run.
Have I been wasting my life. :)

Benno, G-code is for a Pick and Place machine, not for engraving the PCB !

Until we get the IDF export for free (as Designspark users do, despite paying nothing!) there isn't likely to be much interest. |
