Hi,
Is anyone getting this problem?
Every sixth (approx) time 'Save' is pressed or I do a "forward design changes" I get the following:
EasyPC dialog "Failed to save document"
sometimes followed (not always) by a windows error dialog "Failed to write 'C:\folder\folder\etc\file.sch'"
I am using Vista 32-bit, no UAC, full admin, latest EasyPC and no problems with any other programs. The project is in a 'normal' folder on C: drive and there are no folder or file attributes set. The problem occurs with dual or single screen mode and the file signatures are OK.
I have also recently had a crash where the pcb file vanished from the disk but I managed to recover from the backup file.
Help! I now have no idea if files are saved correctly or changes are forwarded so I manually backup as often as I can.
Any ideas, workarounds would be appreciated.
Al

SugarSync specifically mention NOT to use for continuous updates, such as accounts packages such as QuickBooks and Email. Its exactly the same as Dropbox except you can sync specific folders rather that just files in a single folder as Dropbox does. Apart from that they are the same. These cloud systems are more for backup and synchronisation than for real-time storage .... that's what your HD is for. The problem isn't really an EasyPC one.

I'm very surprised by some of the replies to this. I don't see anything on the Dropbox website warning against this way of working. I don't have any problems with Excel or other applications, either saving or navigating through my Dropbox folders/directory structure.

Working in "The Cloud" is not going to go away. Easy-PC will have to get to grips with it.

Do not use Dropbox for your save location, your just asking for trouble doing that. Same thing if you use Sugarsync. Depending on your internet speed, connection, etc etc, writing can be slow, or if these is a network problem, perhaps not at all. This means one previous save may still be in progress when you decide to save again, just causes problems.
Better to simply save to a local folder on your HD then when you want to backup to Dropbox simply copy to the Dropbox folder then.
Dropbox is not designed for "continuous backup" i.e. you shopuldn't use it for email or accounts packages etc.

Why do people use Dropbox folders? Dropbox folders are not on local drives. You expose yoir deign files to orher people.
al1234 Posted - 23 Jan 2015 : 09:48:05
I don't use a dropbox folder to save EasyPC files since my original problems.
As a test for you I tried a 'save as' and a 'save' to a dropbox folder and there was no difference in speed. I was also able to navigate around the folders with no noticeable lag.
You might want to start a new thread or contact EasyPC support direct?

Bump.

Does no one else have this problem? Does no one else save to a Dropbox folder? My network is not very big; three PCs and an iphone at most!

I usually resort to doing a "copy" and "paste" in Windows Explorer rather than a "save as" within Easy-PC and the associated long wait. Surely this can't be right?
ricobasso Posted - 15 Jan 2015 : 10:09:59
I now have V18 and the original problem is solved but I now have a "save as" problem. Easy-pc takes an age to navigate through directories in the windows explorer

I have upgraded and still experiencing problems with easy pc and file explorer.

After saving with a file explorer widow open.
The file explorer window fails to close unless Easy PC is shut down.
PC slows down and busy icon shown when floating over file explorer window.

I have had problems with easy PC and One Drive and the slow down is similar when opening a one drive file.

Easy PC has a problem remembering file/directory history.

My thoughts are that the process used to save/open files is a possible problem.

But not available as a bug fix for V17?!?
DavidM Posted - 23 Dec 2014 : 09:19:51
There is a fix for this issue in the latest V18 update (18.0.4), although for some reason this appears not to be shown in the list of fixes for that patch.

Easy-pc V 17.0.7 on Windows 7 32 bit and my work files are in a Dropbox folder shared with another PC

I'm getting "failed to save document" popping up all the time, due to my autosave settings I guess. But, I also get the message if I use ctrl S to save. Also sometimes happens if I save using the floppy disc icon in the taskbar.

I can get round it by doing a "save as" and then saying yes to overwrite an existing file but this is mega-tedious and very timewasting.

Is there a fix?

My previous comments about disabling McAfee backup may not be accurate.
I am still having "failed to save document" and "failed to write" problems. This happens regularly so it's repeatable enough for you to debug. If this coincides with an easyPC crash I lose a significant amount work. Having a regular backup isn't the answer since I can't guarantee to perfectly replicate what I've done since the last successful backup (which by definition of the failed save problem is longer than you would wish)

If you are serious about finding the cause of this problem then your developers need to view a crash log. If there isn't one available then send me (and everyone having problems) a debug version of EasyPC that creates one and we'll send you as many logs as you could wish for.

It is not reasonable to expect such a longstanding problem to still be outstanding. I have put up with this for over a year!

Please stop adding little used features to EasyPC and make the basic program more stable.

I have used Easy-PC since the DOS versions. Soon I'll have to look elsewhere for my PCB design software

I just noticed that when the Failure occured, the status of the file was Offline (needs to be sync'ed).
So maybe windows was preventing the file from being saved to the network as it thought this would generate a file sync conflict....worth looking into.

I am having this same problem after moving to windows 7 64 Bit and the common factor it seems is that I am working on a network drive that is made available offline using windows offline files.
This is not something new and I have done this for years in XP but since I started using Windows 7 I have noticed it a lot. In fact I lost 2 days work when the save failed and offline files went a bit crazy.
It must be something to do with accessing files when they are already open for editing or something.

Our code should be fully compatible with Vista etc, we don't use any sneaky functions for file access, its all completely standard MS/Windows stuff.

Thanks for the info anyway, we'll start digging further to see if we can finally nail this one down.
al1234 Posted - 23 Aug 2010 : 10:05:37
“McAfee SecurityCentre” latest updated version (9.15.179) “Local Archive” function of “Backup and Restore” (3.15.100)

If I enable it while EasyPC is running then the operation is as described earlier. Both the sch and pcb have the problem. Once disabled the problem immediately disappears.

Maybe your gurus need to update their compiler for one compatible with Vista and use all the official file access functions?
DavidM Posted - 23 Aug 2010 : 09:37:02
That does indeed look like a solid clue as to the culprit.

Once McAfee is re-enabled, does the Save go wrong straight away on the first time, or are you back to the situation where you can Save for a few times then you get an error?

Also, can you tell us the exact McAfee product name and any relevant build or version numbers? This might help us isolate the possible cause; we have some systems running McAfee software but I'm not sure they encompass a 'backup and restore' option.

I've had no save problems for several weeks but I have just realised that my McAfee "backup and restore" was unintentionally disabled. Once enabled the save problems came back!
One for your software gurus?

The .icr problem is different, and I believe it's been fixed in V13. That's less important, as it's just a report. The biggest issue is the random failure to save the actual design file, which is proving quite intractable to solve.
rbuck Posted - 07 Jul 2010 : 02:29:23
I consistently get the same error Peter is getting. After the 2nd or 3rd forward design change I start getting the failed to open current_project.icr file. However, as Peter stated, the forwards always work so I have been ignoring the message. If you completely close EasyPC and re-open it, the forward design change will work for 2 or 3 times before the error message comes back. Looking in the design folder shows the icr file as being 0 bytes. I am running Version 12.0.6 on XP Pro, Dual core 4400 AMD processor, 2 Gig memory.

Hi all,

I get something similar to the problem with forward design changes.
I had a closer look & this is what I see. First of all I am still
using 12.0.6 on XP & noticed this after 12.0.4 (I think thats right).
When doing forward design changed I often get failed to open "whatever_project.icr".
I continue and the forward always works, so its only an irritation for me.
Its a bit variable, sometimes it fails on the second forward, sometimes on the
third or fourth. I can't say I have seen it on a first "forward design changes".
What happens is the "icr" file is created with zero length and the file is left
open. A subsequent forward then can't create a new "icr" file. You have to close
Easy-PC to release the file, closing the project is not enough.
My feeling is this is an thread problem/race rather than interaction with
other software.
I can make this happen very easily so if I can try something let me know.

Peter.

I use McAfee "Backup and Restore". I think it constantly monitors files looking for changes that need backing up at the next incremental backup. So it has the potential to cause problems. I'll try disabling it when I've got some spare time...

Hi.

I have had this a bit but I have maybe a slightly unusual setup these days and the problem started at the same time my setup became 'unusual'.

I use Dropbox to sync my work across desktop and laptop. It is a application that detects changes in files and uploads those files to an online server. Any of the user's computers that are linked to this server are kept in sync.

Sometimes when I work on a layout I find that I get this failed to save document error. I always put it down to the fact that maybe the file was being accessed by the Dropbox software. I mean maybe it is just a coincidence but i just put it down to a lock on the file issue.

Firstly, I CAN reassure you that you are not the only user experiencing something along these lines. Unfortunately, that's about where the good news stops. We are aware of this problem. Despite trying a lot of different scenarios, so far we haven't been able to reproduce it at all. It's intermittent, which suggests that it's not primarily a hard coded problem.

The two likely causes would seem to be either interaction with some other code running on the machine (not necessarily third party - it could be file version within the O/S), or a shortage of some machine resource required for files to be saved.

I can't tell you what is causing it, but I can tell you what it is not. It's not restricted to one operating system, machine type, processor type, design type or program version. Time for which the program's been running does seem to have some effect, but it's not clear yet how much.

If anyone notices a pattern, or can throw any light on what might be involved, please email support with your input. We'd welcome it!
