We've had one instance recently of a previously working application suddenly giving an error message about MS runtime files and causing the program to 'terminate in an unusual way'. This was finally traced to a malware program (RLVKNLG) that had somehow got onto the system.

If you have a problem like this, particularly on a system where the program used to work okay, the first step is to ensure the machine is clear of virus, trojan horse, spyware or other malware.

Failing that, you could use the MSCONFIG utility (Start, Run, MSCONFIG) to start your system with a Clean Boot. On the Services tab, check 'Hide all Microsoft Services' and click 'Disable All'. Then on the Startup tab, click 'Disable All', then OK.

Now restart the computer and see if the application will now start. If so, use MSCONFIG again to work through the items you have disabled until you find which one is causing the fault.
