If there any reason why it is not possible to dimension items in the schematic editor.
I would also for documentation purposes like to be able to dimension a PCB symbol.
the use of the correct layer would mean these dimensions do not need to show up on the pcb.
Could these be added as a feature in the next version

I use Easy-PC to create loom information. This is done from a General Assembly Schematic with standard circuit symbols which translate to PCB symbols of front panel and chassis items to scale. I use 1/10 mechanical scale due to limitations of 'PCB' size for large items.
This is done as a standard project with GA schematic and Loom 'PCB' drawing. Library components are standard format with schematic symbols and loom/pcb symbols (somewhat stylised in some cases). 'Tracks' are routed where the loom will go.
By adding Wire codes including colour and wire type, as Visible Net names it makes it easy to connect the loom to the components.

Part of the reason for asking is that other people I work with have used the schematic editor to do drawings and have taken the trouble to create components to size, this goes back to the DOS days of easyPC. I suspect even before dimensions could be added in the PCB.
Most likely also since the drawing borders are created in the schematic this continued.
I use easyPC pcb package to create front panel drawings since it is relatively simple to use component positions of on-board connectors and then line these up to a front panel.
to do this I make full use of layers to hid drafting lines etc
Having the ability to dimension on the schematic layer is something which would be useful but not a show stopper.
If dimensions were allowed on the PCB symbol editor then this I feel would help with quality control. allowing easier checking with original drawing of part.
I accept that easyPC is not a mechanical drawing package and programs such as AutoCAD are specifically designed for this purpose, but easyPC does what I need it to.

I wouldn't expect a schematic editor to have this feature. If you require simple 2D CAD package there are plently available to choose from. However, I have in the past drawn and dimensioned looms in the pcb editior! It may be possible that you may be able to add text dimensions (values), "To" symbols and dangling tracks to a schematic to achieve what you need.
Dimensions do not have to be on the "Dimensions" layer. They can be placed on any working layer, such as on the botton silk screen, top silk, top copper, copper copper, inner layers or even "My Info" layer if you create it. It is up to you what layers are "visible" when plotting. |
